Step 1: Start with the Foundation

Mattress Topper (Optional but Recommended): Place a high-quality mattress topper for an extra layer of plush comfort and support, which is key to the "cloud-like" hotel feel.
Mattress Protector: Always use a mattress protector to keep your foundation clean and protected.
Step 2: The Base Sheets
Fitted Sheet: Start with a high-quality fitted sheet (often cotton, Egyptian cotton, or linen with a percale or sateen weave). Ensure it fits snugly and is smooth with no wrinkles. For the classic hotel look, choose crisp white or a neutral color.
Flat Sheet (Top Sheet): Place the flat sheet on top, upside down (the "good" or hemmed side should face the mattress). This way, when you fold the top edge back, the finished side is visible.
The Hospital Corner Tuck: Tuck the flat sheet tightly under the mattress on the sides and at the foot of the bed, using the "hospital corner" technique for a crisp, tailored finish.
Step 3: The Mid-Layers (Warmth and Texture)
Light Blanket or Quilt (Optional): Add a lightweight cotton, cashmere, or waffle-knit blanket between the flat sheet and your duvet/comforter. This is an optional layer that provides extra warmth and texture. Tuck this layer in neatly, also using hospital corners if desired.
Duvet or Comforter (The Star): This is the main insulating layer and centerpiece.
The Look: Use a plush, high-loft down or down-alternative duvet insert. Hotels often use white duvet covers for a clean, fresh look.
Layering Technique: Lay the duvet/comforter over the bed, aligning it evenly. For the signature hotel look, fold the top portion of the duvet down about a quarter to a third of the way. This fold exposes the flat sheet and creates an inviting, voluminous look.
Step 4: The Pillow Arrangement
Designers often recommend using an odd number of pillows for visual interest (3, 5, or 7, depending on bed size).
Back Row (Structure/Support): Place two to three large Euro pillows (square, 26x26 inches) upright against the headboard. These add height and structure. Use coordinating shams.
Middle Row (Sleeping Pillows): Place your standard or king-sized sleeping pillows in front of the Euro shams. You can stack them flat or prop them up. Use crisp pillowcases, often with a decorative trim or piping.
Front Row (Decorative Finish): Add one or two smaller accent pillows (like a bolster or a decorative throw cushion) in front of the others to add a final pop of color, pattern, or texture.
Step 5: The Finishing Touch
Throw Blanket: Drape a textured throw blanket (knit, faux fur, or soft wool) across the foot of the bed. You can fold it neatly for a structured look or casually drape it diagonally or over a corner for a more relaxed, boutique feel.
